Review of Bitmain Antminer S23 – One of the Most Efficient ASIC Miners of 2025

0 427

If Satoshi Nakamoto had known that one day industrial-scale mining machines would appear with hash rates exceeding one petahash, he probably would have built ASIC resistance into Bitcoin’s design. But history has no “what ifs,” and for such a powerful network as Bitcoin, ASIC resistance would hardly have been beneficial. Standard CPUs and GPUs would simply not be able to handle its security, while PoS-based consensus comes with its own risks.

No matter what skeptics argue, mining continues to be a significant industry – and ASIC hardware still holds the leading role. For those planning to get involved, cutting costs by purchasing second-hand or outdated devices is rarely a smart move. While older machines might look attractive due to their lower price, they often generate disappointing results: reduced hashrates bring in only modest income, and the likelihood of breakdowns remains high, even under perfect maintenance.

A smarter approach is to invest in modern, energy-efficient models. Although the initial expense is higher, such miners use far less electricity per terahash and, when maintained correctly, can deliver stable performance for many months – often half a year or longer – without major issues.

Today we’ll look at the latest SHA-256 mining machine from China’s industry giant Bitmain – the Antminer S23. It comes in several versions, with the flagship Antminer S23 Hyd 3U delivering an unprecedented 1.16 PH/s. Impressive, right? Let’s take a closer look at this piece of Chinese engineering.

What is the Antminer S23?

The Antminer S23 is a SHA-256 ASIC miner developed and manufactured by Bitmain, one of the world’s leading producers of cryptocurrency mining hardware.

According to ultraming.com, as of spring 2025 Bitmain controlled about 80% of the global Bitcoin ASIC market. While the company manufactures devices across multiple algorithms, SHA-256 remains its primary focus, powering Bitcoin and dozens of other cryptocurrencies. Аdvantages of the Antminer S23

The main advantages of Bitmain’s new SHA-256 miner series are hashrate and energy efficiency.

  • The air-cooled model consumes only 11 watts per terahash, while the hydro-cooled version requires even less.
  • The most powerful mining ASIC – S23 Hyd 3U – has crossed the 1 PH/s threshold, something unimaginable just a few years ago in Bitcoin mining.

Even the budget-friendly air-cooled model delivers a respectable hashrate. Bitmain ASICs have always been recognized for their reliability and quality. These devices can be used for building large-scale mining farms or hosting them in mining hotels.

Antminer S23 Setup and Operation

All ASICs follow a similar setup process. If you purchased Bitmain equipment, you need to download the official software from the manufacturer’s website to access the web control panel.

  1. Install the program on a computer connected to the same network as the miner.
  2. Initial check (air-cooled models): you can launch the machine immediately after verifying assembly quality. To test, lift the device and gently tilt it. If nothing rattles inside, it’s ready for use.
  3. Cooling preparation (hydro/immersion models):
    • Hydro-cooled units are filled with deionized water.
    • Immersion models must be submerged into special dielectric coolant tanks.
  4. IP detection: power up the device, press and hold the IP Report button for a few seconds, and the software will determine its IP address. Enter it in your browser, then log in using the default credentials (root/admin).
  5. Configuration: in the web panel, connect to a mining pool, update firmware, and adjust settings. Replace the default password, save changes, and reboot. If done correctly, mining will start. Monitoring is available both in the pool dashboard and the ASIC control panel.

Operating conditions:
Air-cooled miners should run in dry, well-ventilated rooms with temperatures between +20 °C and +40 °C. They are not suitable for residential spaces due to noise and high power consumption.

Firmware updates:
Updates can be applied via the web panel. Since 2024, Bitmain devices feature overwrite protection. Alternative firmware can be installed via SD card, but this voids the warranty. For assistance, you can contact Bitmain’s support service.

Comparison with Competitors

MicroBT Miner

Bitmain’s closest competitors, MicroBT and Canaan Avalon, have not yet released new SHA-256 models.

  • The top air-cooled Whatsminer, M66, reaches 280 TH/s at 5572W.
  • The Canaan Avalon A15XP produces 206 TH/s at 3367W.

In general, the Antminer S23 lineup is considered the most energy-efficient option for Bitcoin mining on the market right now, although the cost of these devices is still quite steep.

Where to Buy and What to Consider

Retailers in Russia have already opened pre-orders for the latest Bitmain machines. The Antminer S23 can be reserved through platforms such as IBMM, Prominer, 21Mining, and MiningShop24. International buyers can also check marketplaces like ASICminer Market or Cryptominers.bz, where pre-orders are available as well.

As of this writing, Bitmain’s official website only lists the Antminer S23 Hyd version for pre-order, with the first shipment scheduled for January 2026.

When buying, choose trusted sellers with a solid reputation to avoid losing money.

While the Antminer S23 outperforms its rivals technically, it comes with a drawback – a high upfront cost. For example, if you purchased this SHA-256 miner from IBMM today, you would only break even after about two years, assuming current profitability levels remain unchanged. Along the way, you’ll face taxes on mined coins, large electricity bills, and the need to safeguard your earnings while tracking crypto market trends.

Mining investments are always risky, but Bitcoin still has enormous growth potential. A $100,000 price per coin is not the ceiling, but just the beginning. Whether to invest in the latest Bitmain ASIC or put your money to alternative use is a decision every miner must make individually.
