The digital currency Monero (XMR) is designed for anonymous payments. Two personal keys, stealth addresses, and a ring-signature system guarantee transaction privacy. But to operate within the XMR blockchain ecosystem, you first need to create a Monero wallet.

What is XMR wallet
A Monero wallet is a tool – whether an app or a website – that allows you to store and manage your XMR. Mobile and desktop versions require installation on your phone or computer, while browser-based wallets work online with no software setup. Those who want maximum protection can pair the official Monero wallet with a Ledger Nano S hardware device for bank-grade security. XMR is also available in multi-asset wallets such as Coinomi, Edge, and Cryptonator. You can even keep your coins directly on an exchange wallet across roughly 70 platforms, though this option is considered less secure.
Choosing a Wallet for Monero

The main criteria when choosing an XMR wallet are ease of use and security. The simplest path is to create an online wallet so you can access your assets from any internet-connected device.
To create an online wallet:
- Go to https://wallet.mymonero.com and at the bottom of the page click Quick access wallet online.
- On the next page, choose Create new wallet.
- Read the instructions, tick GOT IT, and click Next.
- Save the 25-word seed on paper in the exact order.
- Proceed to the next page and re-enter the first 7 words of the mnemonic in the correct order.
Done – your XMR wallet is created. Be sure to record your secret view key, secret spend key, and address. On the same page you can download a lightweight wallet for Windows; versions for other operating systems are hosted on GitHub.
Official Local Monero Wallet
Download the desktop Monero GUI wallet from the project’s official site: https://web.getmonero.org/downloads. You can either run a full node (keeping a full copy of the XMR blockchain on your drive) or work with a remote node.
In addition, the local Monero GUI wallet lets you mine XMR on a CPU. After Monero’s transition to the RandomX algorithm, this option became especially relevant.
Mobile Client

The official site getmonero.org recommends these mobile apps:
- Cake Wallet – iOS wallet with built-in exchange for swapping Monero to other crypto;
- Monerujo – Android app with a QR module for convenient transactions.
A full list of XMR-compatible apps is available on Google Play and the App Store.
Installation and Setup Guide
The Monero GUI wallet doesn’t require installation. Download and unzip the archive, launch monero-wallet-gui, and begin configuration.
If you’re on Windows, make sure your antivirus doesn’t block the app. You can use the following shortcuts to navigate:
- Ctrl + Tab – next settings page;
- Ctrl + Shift + Tab – previous page.
First, select the interface language and go to Create / restore wallet.
- Click Create a new wallet, and choose Mainnet to use the main Monero network. Testnet is for developers who want to help test new features. Stagenet lets you safely test Monero. If you don’t plan to contribute to development, choose Mainnet and proceed.
- Choose a wallet name. Store the mnemonic phrase in a safe place and specify where to save wallet data.
- Create a strong password. If you lose it, you can recover access using the seed, but you’ll need to reinstall the program.
- Check Start node in background if you’re downloading the full chain to your PC, or Connect to a remote node to use a remote server.
- Specify the location for blockchain data if needed.
- Enter the address and port of a bootstrap node if you want to start using the wallet without waiting for full sync. A list of remote nodes is at https://moneroworld.com.
When setup is complete, a window will appear showing the countdown to program start. If you’re creating your first full node, wait for full synchronization. Special settings – like view-only mode or manually adding an already downloaded blockchain – are used when restoring an existing wallet.
Security

Once your wallet is ready, make sure to back up your address and all key information in a safe, offline place. If you connect through a remote node, you won’t need to download the entire blockchain – however, this convenience reduces transaction privacy and safety. Inside the “Seeds & Keys” section, you’ll find your recovery seed and both public and private keys.
Remember: a seed phrase must remain secret at all times. Anyone who sees it can access your funds.
Key list:
- Secret view key – monitors incoming transactions;
- Public view key – used to generate the stealth address;
- Secret spend key – signs outgoing transactions. Keep it secret, like your mnemonic;
- Public spend key – available to network nodes for processing outgoing transactions; it’s used to verify the one-time key that’s automatically generated when you send funds.
The Export Spendable Wallet button creates a QR code containing all private keys; it can be used instead of the mnemonic to restore your wallet.
Export View Only Wallet generates a QR code for view-only balance access.
The most secure setup is a full node paired with a Ledger device.
How to Send Coins to Another Person

Use the Send tab to create a transfer:
- Enter the Amount;
- Choose the transaction priority. If speed isn’t critical, leave default;
- Enter the recipient address. When sending to an exchange or service that doesn’t support integrated addresses, a Payment ID is required;
- Description is an optional memo;
- Privacy level / RingSize adjusts confidentiality. Move the slider to change ring size for ring signatures – the higher it is, the greater the anonymity and the higher the fee. If you’re not transacting on dark markets, keep the recommended value;
- Sweep unmixable lets you spend tiny “dust” outputs by combining them with other outputs;
- Sign tx file is used to sign transactions formed on a cold wallet.
If you frequently send to the same addresses – e.g., exchange deposits – save them in the Address Book.
Conclusion
A Monero wallet itself can’t fully protect you if you ignore digital hygiene. Storing passwords and private keys on a device connected to the internet is eventually a recipe for loss. Take personal security seriously – and may your XMR stay safe.
