ShapeShift Founder Erik Voorhees Buys Back $56M in Ethereum a Year After Selling Near the Top

Erik Voorhees, founder of ShapeShift, a non-custodial exchange that lets users swap digital assets without an account or identity verification, has returned to Ethereum in size.

On-chain data tracked by analytics account Lookonchain shows two wallets attributed to Voorhees spent 49.08 million USDT to buy approximately 24,968 ETH over the weekend, routed through CoW Protocol, a decentralised exchange aggregator that optimises execution across multiple liquidity sources.

The average fill price was approximately $2,098, putting the total at around $56.5 million. The timing has a clean narrative. Almost exactly a year ago, Voorhees sold 12,886 ETH for approximately $42.83 million at an average of $3,324, near what turned out to be a local high. His buyback price is roughly 37% below that exit.

Whether the gap reflects deliberate tactical timing or coincidence is impossible to determine from onchain data alone. Wallets show what was purchased, not why. Voorhees has not publicly explained the trades.

Tokenized Gold First, Then ETH

The Ethereum purchases were not Voorhees’s only move this week. Earlier, on-chain data showed him buying PAXG and XAUT,  tokens that each represent one troy ounce of physical gold held in custody, for approximately $6.8 million, averaging around $4,896 per token.

The sequence of gold-backed assets followed by a large ETH position suggests a broader reallocation rather than a single opportunistic trade, though Voorhees has not publicly explained either purchase.

Voorhees has been active in crypto since at least 2011, having founded SatoshiDICE, a Bitcoin gambling platform sold in 2013 for $11.5 million in one of the earliest major blockchain acquisitions on record.

ShapeShift, launched in 2014, became one of the most widely used non-custodial swap platforms before a 2018 Wall Street Journal investigation into money-laundering allegations prompted identity checks, which Voorhees later removed. The company moved to a decentralised autonomous organisation structure in 2021.

Not the Only Buyer

Voorhees was not alone. Lookonchain also flagged a $17.46 million purchase of 7,769 ETH by Billy Luedtke, chief executive of Intuition Protocol and an early Ethereum participant, completed within roughly two hours.

Liquidity provider Cumberland also separately withdrew 23,000 ETH, worth more than $50 million, from Binance and Coinbase, a move that typically signals off-exchange accumulation or preparation for OTC block trades. All three transactions occurred in the same session.

The broader backdrop has been supportive. Spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds, regulated products that hold ETH directly and trade on stock exchanges, recorded $160.8 million in net inflows last week, per ETFDB data

ETH had risen approximately 12.9% over the prior seven days, trading around $2,268 at time of writing. Whether on-chain accumulation and ETF demand reflect coordinated conviction or simply the same underlying shift in sentiment is impossible to say.

What the data confirms is that several high-profile addresses moved material capital into Ethereum within the same narrow window, and that Voorhees, for the first time in a year, is back among them.
